HSCI 410 – Legal and Ethical Issues For Health and Human Science Professionals Case Study Analysis of Ethical and Legal issues in Health Care Careers Project (Case Study Analysis Project) This project requires students to apply course content to a case study. The study may be media based (a review of a film holding medical ethics issues) or an example from the student’s work life. Students will produce a 5-to-6-page paper, worth 120 points. The project is due on 11/30/2020. Real-Life Option: If you select a real-life example please be mindful of protecting the privacy of those involved (i.e., the client/patient, institution, and health care workers etc.). Specific instructions include: • use Pozgar, codes of ethics, regulatory agencies, and relevant law sources in your analysis • select at least two ethical concepts (i.e., beneficence, justice, paternalism, nonmaleficence) that relate to care of individuals and families with the issues presented • explore and discuss the related health care or public policy research and how health care in specific or society in general might address these issues • include discussion of 1-2 scholarly research articles and provide links to these publications The analysis should strive to explore the legal and ethical concepts that were involved, indicate any relevant legal issues with special consideration of at least two of the following which include regulatory, criminal, and/or civil and ethical issues from at least one health career Code of Ethics. Please be specific regarding how those in your health career may use these concepts in working with such individuals and families. Media-based case study option: Students who select the Film Analysis Option will be focusing on the ethical and legal issues involved in caring for those who have unique lifestyle situations and the special issues involved in caring for them.
Specific instructions and information include: select a film (feature or documentary) from the list below unless you wish to select a different film which must be approved by me issues addressed in the file of choice must include one of the following themes such as poverty, the sex trade industry, immigration, elderly, dementia, etc. films listed are available on NETFLIX, Hulu, YouTube, and DVD Pozgar, codes of ethics, regulatory agencies, and relevant law sources must be discussed in your analysis at least two ethical concepts (e.g., beneficence, justice, paternalism, nonmaleficence) must be related to the care of individuals and families with the issues noted explore and discuss the related health care or public policy research and how health care in specific or society in general might address these issues include discussion of 1-2 scholarly research articles and provide links to the scholarly research articles/publications used The analysis should strive to explore the legal and ethical concepts that were involved, indicate any relevant legal issues with special consideration of at least two of the following which include regulatory, criminal, and/or civil and ethical issues from at least one health career Code of Ethics. Since some of the films lister are decades old, students are encouraged to compare and contrast how public policy may have changed since the time the film was made. Special Note – the health care issue need not necessarily be the focus of the film, but it must be an important element. Some of the films listed have explicit sexual content and/or profanity so please be prudent in your choice of viewing companions. Approved films Heroin: Cape Cod, USA (documentary) (opiods, sex workers) Hot Girls Wanted (documentary) (sex workers) Still Alice (dementia) Monsieur Lazhar (grief, immigration) Rachel Getting Married (addictions, grief) Winter’s Bone (poverty, additions, mental health issues) Away from Her (dementia) What is Eating Gilbert Grape (poverty, mental health issues, cognitive issues) The Savages (elder care) El Norte (poverty, refugees) Frontline: Growing up Trans (documentary) (sexual identity) East of Salinas (documentary) (poverty, immigration) And the Band Played On (sexual identity, marginalization) Scoring Rubric for either option: 20 points -Synopsis of the film and health care ethics and legal issues in the film or -Overview of specifics of case study 30 points -Concepts of ethics (at least two) in the care of patients/families with these issues 10 points -Exploration of health care or public policy research into how health care in specific cases or society in general can address these issues. Include discussion of 1-2 scholarly research articles. Provide links to these publications. 50 points -Analysis—Explore legal and ethical concepts involved for health care workers caring for such individuals—remember legal issues focus can be regulatory, criminal, and/or civil. Be specific how those in your health career may use these concepts in working with such individuals. 10 points -APA format, grammar, readability 120 points total
