Alexis – Week 4 Disc.

Greetings Classmates,
If I were designing a 10-week course on strategic planning, I’d focus on essential topics that provide both a theoretical understanding and practical skills necessary for effective strategy development and implementation in business. Here’s a suggested outline for such a course, along with explanations on why these topics are vital:
1. Introduction to Strategic Planning: Understand the fundamentals of strategic planning, including definitions, the importance of strategy in business success, and the difference between strategic planning and operational planning. This foundation is crucial for setting the context of the entire course.
2. Environmental Scanning: Learn how to analyze the internal and external environments of a business. This includes tools like SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis and PESTEL (Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Environmental, Legal) analysis. Understanding the landscape helps businesses anticipate changes and respond proactively.
3. Vision, Mission, and Values: Develop the ability to craft clear and compelling vision and mission statements and to define core values. These elements guide the strategic direction and decision-making processes within a company, aligning strategy with the overarching goals.
4. Strategic Objectives and Goal Setting: Focus on setting SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals. Strategic objectives translate the broad visions into actionable steps, which are essential for implementation and evaluation.
5. Strategy Formulation: Dive into different frameworks and models for strategy formulation, such as Porter’s Generic Strategies and the Blue Ocean Strategy. This helps in understanding different strategic approaches and selecting the most appropriate one for the business context.
6. Strategy Implementation: Explore the challenges of strategy implementation, including resource allocation, change management, and ensuring alignment across the organization. Effective implementation is crucial as it often determines whether a strategy succeeds or fails.
7. Performance Measurement: Learn about Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), Balanced Scorecards, and other tools to measure the success of strategic initiatives. Monitoring performance is essential to understand if strategic objectives are being met and to make necessary adjustments.
8. Leadership and Strategic Change: Examine the role of leadership in strategic planning, including how leaders inspire, motivate, and drive change within an organization. Leadership is pivotal in navigating the company through strategic shifts and in fostering a culture that embraces strategic goals.
9. Corporate Governance and Ethics in Strategic Planning: Discuss the importance of ethical considerations and corporate governance in strategy, ensuring accountability and transparency in strategic decisions, which builds trust and aligns the organization with societal values.
10. Case Studies and Strategic Planning Simulation: Apply learned concepts to real-world scenarios through case studies and simulations. This practical application helps solidify understanding and improve strategic thinking and decision-making skills.

Strategic planning is an essential process that facilitates the development of various strategies to support organizations in accomplishing their goals and objectives over three to five years (Uzarski & Broome, 2019). Though it can take many different forms, most strategic planning processes share a common framework. These fundamental subjects include gathering relevant data, involving employees, soliciting input, communicating and disseminating the plan, and implementing and evaluating (Uzarski & Broome, 2019).
An article published by Harvard Business School (2020) discussed three benefits of learning strategic planning: creating one, forward-focused vision, drawing attention to biases and flaws, and tracking progress based on strategic goals. Given the significance of learning strategic planning, there are specific topics I would like to cover in a 10-week course.
The topics that I would cover in my 10-week course would be:
1. Introduction to Strategic Planning
2. Defining Vision, Mission, and Values
3. Environmental Analysis: Internal & External (SWOT, PESTEL, etc.)
4. Goal Setting and Objective Formulation
5. Strategy Formulation
6. Action Planning and Resource Allocation (Financial, human, and technological)
7. Implementation and Execution
8. Performance Measurement and Monitoring
9. Communication and Alignment
10. Evaluation and Continuous Improvement
These topics are important because strategic planning is a thorough process that helps companies succeed over the long run by providing guidance on setting clear goals, allocating resources wisely, anticipating changes, and responding to them. The goal of any business is to achieve success and maintain competitiveness. By understanding the strategic planning process and its significance, businesses can maintain alignment with their objectives, mission, and values.
